The jump from 256GB to 2TB is $1,200 — storage has never cost so much on an iPhone, because the base price is already in laptop territory.
Why the same phone costs $2,670 more in some countries
Three things stack on top of Apple's base price before a phone reaches a shelf outside the US:
1. VAT and sales tax. US list prices exclude tax (you pay it at checkout, 0–10% depending on state). European and UK prices include 19–25% VAT in the sticker price. That's most of the gap right there.
2. Import duties and levies. India layers customs duty on top of everything — a big reason iPhones consistently cost 30–50% more there. Turkey is the extreme case: stacked taxes can push a flagship iPhone past double the US price.
3. Apple's regional pricing buffers. Apple doesn't just convert currency — it rounds to "clean" local price points and bakes in a cushion against currency swings. When the dollar is strong, that cushion quietly gets bigger.
Should you buy the iPhone Duo abroad to save money?
Short answer: it rarely works out the way people hope.
The Duo is eSIM-only worldwide — so there's no physical-SIM hassle when bringing one home. And iPhones bought from Apple are factory unlocked, so it'll work on your carrier. If you're wondering how that differs from a carrier-locked phone, our factory unlocked vs carrier locked guide explains it.
But: Apple's warranty is effectively regional. An iPhone bought in the UAE serviced in the US can mean shipping it back or paying out of pocket — Apple Stores do service foreign iPhones for some issues, but policy varies and foldables are exactly the kind of device you'd want covered locally. On a $1,999 first-gen foldable with a delicate hinge, that's a real gamble.
And the math usually fails anyway: the US is already the cheapest market. "Buy abroad" only makes sense if you live somewhere like Turkey or India and happen to be traveling to the US anyway — and even then, factor in that you'll pay US sales tax at checkout and lose the local warranty.
Will the price drop after launch?
Apple doesn't discount its own prices — the $1,999 sticker holds until the next model. But the street price is another story. Foldables depreciate faster than slab iPhones: the Galaxy Z Fold 8 already sells for around $1,549, about $350 under its $1,899 list. If history repeats, patient buyers could see the Duo meaningfully cheaper by spring — which is also when real-world hinge and crease reports will be in. Our full honest Duo verdict covers who should buy at launch and who should wait.

Frequently asked questions
How much is the iPhone Duo in the US?
$1,999 for 256GB, $2,199 for 512GB, $2,599 for 1TB, and $3,199 for 2TB — before sales tax. Preorders open October 16, 2026, on sale October 23.
Why is the iPhone Duo more expensive outside the US?
VAT/sales tax included in the sticker price (19–25% in much of Europe), import duties (especially India and Turkey), and Apple's regional pricing buffers. The US list price excludes tax; most other countries' prices include it.
Where is the iPhone Duo cheapest?
The United States, at $1,999 before tax. No major market undercuts it — even tax-free shopping hubs like the UAE price above the US once Apple's regional pricing is applied.
Can I buy an iPhone Duo in another country and use it in the US?
Yes — it's eSIM-only worldwide and Apple-sold units are factory unlocked, so it works on US carriers. The catch is warranty: Apple service is effectively regional, and on a first-gen foldable that's a meaningful risk.
Will the iPhone Duo get cheaper after launch?
Apple won't cut its own price, but foldables depreciate faster than regular iPhones — the Galaxy Z Fold 8 already sells ~$350 under list. Waiting a few months typically saves real money on foldables.
