iOS 27.0.1: Battery Drain, Freezing Fixes & Known Issues

Last updated: October 24, 2026. Apple released iOS 27.0.1 on September 28, 2026. This article covers what Apple fixed, the problems users are still reporting, and the fixes that actually work.

Is iOS 27.0.1 draining your battery? If your iPhone has felt sluggish, hot, or hungrier for a charger since the iOS 27 update landed, you are far from alone. In our Dubai shop, iOS 27 has been one of the roughest updates we have seen in years — battery drain and hanging are the two complaints we hear from customers almost every day.

Here is the full picture: what iOS 27.0.1 is, what Apple actually fixed, what it did not fix, the problems real users are reporting right now, and eight things you can do about them.

iOS 27.0.1 at a Glance

Version iOS 27.0.1
Released Monday, September 28, 2026 (two weeks after iOS 27)
Build number 24A446
Download size Not published by Apple; users report roughly 1–1.2 GB on iPhone 18 Pro models
Works on iPhone 11 and later, plus iPhone SE (2nd generation) and later — the full iOS 27 list
Security fixes None published — Apple's security releases page lists no CVE entries for 27.0.1
Released alongside iPadOS 27.0.1, macOS 27.0.1, watchOS 27.0.1, visionOS 27.0.1, plus iOS 26.7.1 for older devices

iOS 27.0.1 is a bug-fix release — no new features, no headline additions. If you are waiting for the next feature update, that is iOS 27.2, expected in late October 2026 (note: iOS 27.1 shipped only for the iPhone Duo — every other iPhone skips straight from 27.0.1 to 27.2).

What Apple Fixed in iOS 27.0.1

Apple's release notes list exactly three fixes:

  1. Face ID restarts on iPhone 18 Pro models. iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max could unexpectedly restart when Face ID failed to authenticate. This was the headline bug — within days of launch, owners on r/iPhone18Pro and Apple's forums were reporting that a failed face scan could freeze and reboot the phone, and some saw a "Face ID is Not Available" message during setup. Apple confirmed to 9to5Mac before the release that a fix was coming, and iOS 27.0.1 delivered it.
  2. 2x camera color artifact on iPhone 18 Pro. A color artifact could appear in photos captured at 2x zoom under certain lighting on a small number of iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max units.
  3. Touchscreen freeze when opening two panels. Opening Notification Center and Control Center at the same time could make the touchscreen stop responding.

Two of the three fixes are specific to the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. If you do not own one, the only fix that applies to you is the touchscreen one — and Apple has not confirmed that 27.0.1 resolves the wider freezing complaints below.

What iOS 27.0.1 Did NOT Fix

Apple's notes are the entire fix list — everything else users are reporting below is unconfirmed as far as Apple is concerned. 27.0.1 contains no new features, no published security patches, and no mention of battery, overheating, or the broader lag complaints. Those remain open, and the next hope is iOS 27.2.

Reported Problem #1: Battery Drain

This is the biggest complaint by far — and the one we hear most in the shop.

  • An Apple Support Community thread includes an iPhone 17 Pro owner reporting unusually high battery usage after installing the update.
  • A iPhone 15 Pro Max owner reported losing around 10% battery overnight with limited activity — with Low Power Mode on, which makes the unexplained drain hard to ignore.
  • An iPhone Air owner reported increased overnight drain even with Airplane Mode and Low Power Mode both active.
  • One Reddit user (r/iPhone) with a iPhone 15 Pro Max at 89% battery health said the phone lasted only three to four hours after updating — and claimed battery life jumped to around seven hours after disabling a single setting (more on that in the fixes).
  • An iPhone 16 owner reported roughly four hours of screen time after the phone had finished its post-update indexing — suggesting not every case is explained by background processing.

A fair caveat: Apple says background tasks keep running after a major update — indexing files, completing setup — and the Battery page can show an "Ongoing iOS Update" notice while that work continues. Apple recommends waiting several days before judging battery life. Some users do report that battery settled after a few days. But several accounts describe drain continuing well past that window.

Reported Problem #2: Hanging, Freezing, and Lag

The second headline complaint: phones that stutter, hang, or stop responding to touch.

  • A Reddit user with an iPhone 13 Pro wrote that editing widgets on the home screen "crashes the entire user interface; only a restart fixes it."
  • An iPhone 17 Pro Max owner reported stuttering animations and dropping frame rates in apps like Reddit, WhatsApp, and Wallet, especially when swiping and switching views. Per TechRadar's coverage, some affected users say keeping fewer apps on the home screen mitigates it.
  • A MacRumors forum user said background indexing had been stuck for five days, with keyboard hangs and broken iMessage scrolling on top.
  • An iPhone 17 Pro owner on Apple's developer forum reported the phone completely stopping responding to touch after updating from iOS 26.7 — display fine, buttons fine, touch dead. A clean restore did not help, and reverting to iOS 26 restored touch. Similar touch complaints have appeared on Reddit from iPhone 12 Pro, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max owners: scrolling delays, wrong swipe recognition, stuttering animations.

Apple's 27.0.1 notes only mention the Notification Center + Control Center freeze — not these wider reports.

Reported Problem #3: Overheating

Heat complaints run alongside the battery ones. An iPhone Air owner reported the device heating up since the update, and Reddit threads include iPhone 15 Pro Max owners describing overheating — one user claimed disabling the Connectivity Assist setting (see fixes) resolved their overheating too. Apple itself warns that battery and heat take a hit during post-update background indexing, but persistent heat while the phone sits idle — after indexing is done — is the case worth paying attention to.

Reported Problem #4: App Crashes and Black Screens

Users in r/iOS report apps hanging or opening to a black screen after updating, plus Calendar crashes and video playback glitches. The standard order Apple recommends: force-close the app, restart the iPhone, install any App Store updates, and delete/reinstall the app if the problem persists. Often these are app-compatibility issues that app updates fix within days of a major iOS release.

Reported Problem #5: Cellular and Connectivity Issues

An Apple Support Community thread includes reports from iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 17, and iPhone 18 Pro Max owners who got unreliable mobile data or could not place calls after installing iOS 27 — some on AT&T, though it is not limited to one carrier. Related reports cover RCS/SMS continuity problems and CarPlay glitches (broken media controls, connection instability). For cellular trouble, Apple's recommended steps are: toggle Airplane Mode for at least 15 seconds, restart, check for carrier settings updates, and confirm with your carrier that the account and eSIM are provisioned correctly.

Other Reported Glitches

The Mac Observer's iOS 27 bug roundup (September 28, 2026) and forum threads add: auto-brightness behaving incorrectly on some iPhone 15 Pro units (too dim outdoors, too bright in dark rooms), Home Screen stuttering when tinted or transparent icons are enabled, folders appearing blank until opened, screen taps failing to register, and Dynamic Island visual glitches. None of these are in Apple's 27.0.1 fix list.

One more piece of context: plenty of users say iOS 27 runs fine — or better than iOS 26 — on their phones. These reports describe a rough minority, not every iPhone. But it is a loud minority, and the two complaints we keep hearing in-store are exactly the two at the top of this list.

8 Fixes That Actually Work

These are the workarounds with real user reports behind them — collected from Apple Support, the Mac Observer roundup, and Reddit threads. Try them in order.

  1. Give it 48 hours first. Apple's own guidance: battery and heat take a hit during background indexing after a major update. Check Settings > Battery — if you see an "Ongoing iOS Update" notice, the phone is still working. Judge battery only after that clears. (If indexing seems stuck for days, that is itself a problem — move to step 2.)
  2. Force restart. The classic fix that genuinely resolves a lot of post-update weirdness: quick-press Volume Up, quick-press Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears. Several forum users report this clears soft locks and UI freezes.
  3. Check what's eating the battery. Go to Settings > Battery and look at the per-app breakdown over the last 24 hours and 10 days. If one app is the culprit, update or reinstall it. Update all your apps through the App Store — many post-update crashes are app-compatibility issues, not iOS bugs.
  4. Turn off Connectivity Assist. This is the sleeper fix from Reddit (r/iPhone): a user whose iPhone 15 Pro Max lasted 3–4 hours claimed battery jumped to ~7 hours after disabling it, and another said it fixed overheating. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi, tap the (i) next to your network, and switch off "Use Connectivity Assist" — or turn it off globally on the Wi-Fi settings page. It stops the phone sending extra DNS requests over cellular.
  5. Use Adaptive Power and Low Power Mode. If your iPhone supports Adaptive Power, turn it on (Settings > Battery). Low Power Mode while the phone settles is a reasonable temporary measure — several users reporting overnight drain were already using it, so treat it as mitigation, not a cure.
  6. Reset Face ID (iPhone 18 Pro restarts). If you still get Face ID-related restarts after installing 27.0.1: Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Reset Face ID, restart the phone, then set Face ID up again.
  7. Reset network settings (cellular issues). If data or calls are unreliable after the update: toggle Airplane Mode for 15 seconds first. If that fails, Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Note: this erases saved Wi-Fi passwords and VPN settings, so use it as a last resort before contacting your carrier.
  8. Tame the visual glitches. If the Home Screen stutters or taps misbehave, switch from tinted or clear icons back to default icons — multiple users report this noticeably reduces interface jitter. For auto-brightness acting up: toggle it off and on under Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Auto-Brightness, and restart.

When to stop troubleshooting and wait: if problems persist a full week after updating — past indexing, past restarts — the next real hope is iOS 27.2 (expected late October 2026, currently in beta). Do not factory-reset your phone out of frustration; nothing in the reported issues points to a fix that a clean wipe provides over the steps above.

How to Install iOS 27.0.1

  1. Back up your iPhone first (iCloud or computer) — standard practice before any update.
  2. Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
  3. Tap Download and Install. Expect roughly 1–1.2 GB on newer models; keep the phone on Wi-Fi and charged (or plugged in).

Check which version you are on: Settings > General > About > iOS Version. If it says 27.0.1 (build 24A446), you are current. iPhone Duo owners will see iOS 27.1 instead — that is normal; the Duo ships on its own build.

Should You Install It?

  • iPhone 18 Pro / Pro Max owners: yes, install it now — the Face ID restart fix is the whole point of this release.
  • Everyone else on iOS 27: it is a sensible, small update. It will not fix battery drain or the wider lag reports — those are still open — but there is no reason to avoid it either.
  • Still on iOS 26: if your phone runs fine and you are not itching for the new Siri AI, there is no prize for rushing. Several commentators suggest waiting for iOS 27.2, which should bundle more of the launch-bug fixes.

Buying or selling an iPhone right now? A phone stuck on a buggy update is worth less and harder to move — check our guide to checking if an iPhone is unlocked before you buy, run an IMEI check at imei.ae on any used device, and see the real trade-in vs. selling math before you hand your old phone over.

FAQ

What does iOS 27.0.1 fix?

Three things, per Apple's release notes: unexpected restarts when Face ID fails on iPhone 18 Pro/Pro Max, a 2x camera color artifact on a small number of those models, and a touchscreen freeze when Notification Center and Control Center are opened together. No new features, no published security fixes.

Does iOS 27.0.1 fix battery drain?

Not according to Apple — battery drain is not in the 27.0.1 fix list. User reports of fast drain, overheating, and lag continue on 27.0.1. Try the workarounds above (give it 48 hours, force restart, check Battery settings, disable Connectivity Assist), and watch for iOS 27.2.

How big is the iOS 27.0.1 update and how long does it take?

Apple does not publish the size; users report roughly 1–1.2 GB on iPhone 18 Pro models (smaller on older phones updating from iOS 27). Download plus install typically takes 15–30 minutes on Wi-Fi.

Which iPhones get iOS 27.0.1?

Every iPhone that runs iOS 27: iPhone 11 and later, plus iPhone SE (2nd generation) and later. Install it from Settings > General > Software Update.

Should I wait for iOS 27.2 instead?

If your phone runs fine on iOS 27 and you are not affected by the three fixed bugs, waiting is reasonable — 27.2 is the next feature update (expected late October 2026) and should include more launch-bug fixes. iPhone 18 Pro owners with Face ID restarts should install 27.0.1 now rather than wait.
